1. Lavay Smith makes Billboard Jazz Top 25

We're pleased to announce that our album "Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Miss Thing!" was one of the top 25 best-selling Jazzalbums for the entire year 2000. The chart appeared in the final issue of
Billboard last year, and it looks like we were the only artist-ownedlabel listed. Once again, we owe it all to you-Thanks! We've got some great shows coming up this month. On Saturday, February 17th, we're happy to say that we'll be working once again with the legendary Frankie Manning. Frankie is one of the original creators of the Lindy Hop, and, at age 85, he still tours the world, teaching and spreading joy and love. You may have seen him in the PBS documentary "Jazz'. This will be a great opportunity to learn from a true master of Jazz dance. The evening will be extra special because a hot band, "The Swing Session", willbe on the bill.On Wednesday, February 14th, we've got a special Valentine'sDay show at Biscuits and Blues. If you haven't made it to Biscuits and Blues yet, this is a great chance to check out one of San Francisco's hottest supper clubs. Every seat is a good seat, and the Southern-Style food is fantastic. They even have vegetarian dishes! And with a name like Biscuits and Blues, you know the biscuits are happenin'!

Our schedule is starting to take shape, and it looks like we'll be hitting the road quite a bit. We'll send you detailsof our tours as they develop, but so far it looks like we'll be in theNortheast at least twice this year, as well as the Midwest and Colorado.

2. Fat Notes from Lavay and the Band

Thanks to all of the folks whocame out and helped us with our video. We had a great time filming it at the Cafe du Nord.Once it's edited, we plan on putting it up on our website. For longtime Skillet Licker fans, you'll be able to see a cameo appearance by our old guitar player, Riz, who played with us from 1989 through the early '90's. Riz is a virtuoso musician whoplays piano, guitar, vibes, and many other instruments. You can checkhis music out at:

Speaking of Skillet Lickers, you can see many of the musicians who play with us at other venues in the Bay Area. Jules Broussard and his great band perform every Sunday at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, 153 Throckmorton, from 4 to 8pm. For more info, check out his website at:

http://www.broussard.com/

Robert Stewart and his hot band perform at Pier 23 on Thursday's and at Rassela's on California and Divisadero on Saturdays. Check out his website at:

It's not too late to vote in this years Swing Awards. As you may remember, Lavay Smith was the winner in two categories lastyear. You can cast your votes for this year's awards at www.swingawards.com. Finally, on a sad note, two of our favorite musicians passed away recently. Milt "The Judge" Hinton, one of the greatest bass players of all time, passed away at age 90 on December 19th. He played on as many as 1000 recordings, and performed with many great artists, including Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie,Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Billie Holiday and Bing Crosby. Milt turned slap bass into an art, but he was also great with the bow, or just walking. He was a great photographer, and has two superb books of photos in print, "Bass Line" and "Over Time". Jack McDuff, one of the swinginest organ players in history, passed away on January 23rd at the age of 74. Jack grooved ashard as anybody on the organ, and always had great bands which included the likes of Red Holloway and a young George Benson. We'll miss both of these masters.

Until next time, lots of love, happy new year, and we hope to see you soon,
Lavay Smith and Chris Siebert
